These pics were taken during the Dance Off at the recent WE B Girlz Festival in Berlin by the one and only Martha Cooper. I have utmost respect for Martha, her amazing collection of work and her continued support for women in hip hop, so this is like a pretty big deal to have some NBFG garms snapped by such a legend. The picture above features bgirl Rokafella from New Jersey and below our girl TrubLRoc from the UK in the now out of print Cookie Crew tee. Check more pictures from the event here.

NBFG x Addict AW08 Preview
July 16th, 2008 · Comments Off
It’s about that time of year when we start showcasing some of the things to come. Autumn/Winter ‘08 will see the release of the second NBFG x Addict Colab pieces. This time round there’s going to be one hoodie print and one tee (available in black and white), both featuring the NBFG rolling cube monogram print. All images shot at Addict HQ for the season catalogue and feature my friend Amazing Grace, looking as stunning as ever. Also thanks to Anths, Eloise and Addict fam.

Our favourite jewellery guru from Melbourne Hayley Mei has just launched her new line of goodies for presale including the pendant above. Now I don’t usually feature products much on this blog, but for some reason her cover image (above) just caught my eye. :) Then, when I was perusing Hayleys blog The Mayoress I found this one (below) hahaha! Blog: Schools out!
July 6th, 2008 · Comments Off
Ok, so I’m taking a break right now. For the next few weeks I will be relaxing, sunning myself and indulging in making some new work away from the constraints of my day job. (Which I love ok boss ;) ). So to start with I diagnose some serious feet-up and a good book. This is the only time I ever get to sit, or lay down, and read a whole book. So, courtesy of Jee’s blog I picked up a copy of The Mercedes Ladies book. This book is written by Sheri Sher, one of the founder members of The Mercedes Ladies, original old school all female DJ and MC crew from the Bronx. Despite this book being a novel, which kind of weirded me out because I am a fact fiend, it’s quite an entertaining read. Apparently only the names were changed, but it’s not hard to work out who is who if you so desire. I won’t give too much away, but this book does give a real insight into the life and times of this all girl crew at a time when they really were pioneering. I recommendz.

Blog: Cookies for Anattitude Mag
June 1st, 2008 · No Comments
One of the best things about NBFG is that we get to pay homage to some all-time female hero’s. First with the battle shirt and then last year we produced this tee of London’s own Cookie Crew - the UK’s most notorious rap duo from the eighties and early nineties. Through this I also got the opportunity to meet up with Remedee aka Debbie Pryce, to chat about the London scene in back in the day and of course get my original school wax signed. The interview appeared on notbadforagirl.com for a short while, but now thanks to Jee-Nice there’s gonna be another chance to read it in the forthcoming edition of Anattitude Magazine. Sweet!

Blog: NBFG Aut/Win Sneak Peak (Blue Peter style)
May 25th, 2008 · 3 Comments
Sometimes you need to put something down in order to remember why you first picked it up. It’s a perspective thing, and it’s easily lost when your head’s down, getting on with what you’ve got to do and keeping everyone happy. So, in the name of sanity (mine to be exact) we decided to have a well-deserved bit of feet up earlier in the year after the Addict launch. It was a good thing to do because it made me realise that there’s no point in rushing about trying to meet your own deadlines if you’re not doing it the way you intended, plus it gave us more time to think about what is next. The knock-on of that though is that there isn’t going to be any Summer line dropping for ‘08, but don’t watch that, it’s only a bad thing if you don’t know what is coming next… So here’s a sneak peak of one Aut/Win design in mock-up stage. Join the mailing list at Not Bad For a Girl if you want to be the first to know when the full line drops.

Blog: Back Like Spinal Cord
May 22nd, 2008 · 2 Comments
So, after a few requests from some good people I have relented and karenjane.com is back. It replaces an online portfolio that I first launched in 2003 and which, through many mutations ceased to be sometime in ‘07. This is kind of my first post in real-time. Everything earlier than this are in fact back-posts (no pun intended) to build up the portfolio section with some previous work and happenings. I’m probably going to continue to pad that part out as I go as well. So, as they say, onwards and backwards…

Blog: NBFG x Addict SS08 MethodZip Hoodies
March 9th, 2008 · 2 Comments

The first co-lab between NBFG and Addict has been released. The co-lab was originally conceived and designed in early 2007, when I was asked to design a bespoke print for the Method Zip Hoodie - one of Addict’s staple pieces. This print was something that I had been previously developing and is a twist on the four playing card suit icons with NBFG monograms.

Just made a new book submission to DGV’s Logos 4, after previously being featured in Tres Logos. This submit includes lots of currently unseen NBFG logos. (Exclooosive!) So, hold tight for the book release! Actually don’t hold too tight, it will be quite a while yet…

Blog: Get next…

This is my latest notebook. I always have one that goes literally everywhere with me for ideas, ramblings etc. It’s always there, and I mean always, in my bag or pocket or by the side of my bed for when some random thought seems good enough to want to remember. In fact if I don’t take it out with me it’s guaranteed that I’ll want to write in it, and if it’s there at least I feel like somehow I’m still working. I just pulled out some stuff from there for Summer pieces, which are on their way… I’m particularly loving the book at the moment as it’s covered in icon stickers made from the NBFG x Addict co-lab design which is now only a couple of months away from launching. But talking of the co-lab, we are going to celebrate the drop, thanks to the nice people at Addict HQ, by giving away a bunch of stuff on the site. So keep em peeled for that, free stuff rules right?
